our work on super saturation and ALS is finally out in PNAS
Fresh perspectives win support to push MND research
Like everything else, proteins have a used-by date. Our latest review ponders the relationship between keeping our proteins healthy and neurodegenerative diseases like #MND, #Parkinson's disease and #Alzheimer's disease.
Our new project aims to give a boost to the cells garbage disposal system to help motor neurons survive by delivering a gene therapy using tricks learned in cancer drug delivery.

Finally, Natalies paper: Farrawell, N. E. et al. Distinct partitioning of ALS associated TDP-43, FUS and SOD1 mutants into cellular inclusions. Sci. Rep. 5, 13416; doi: 10.1038/srep13416 (2015). is on line. Nat characterised the aggregation process in the three main types of ubiquitinated aggregates in ALS - FUS, SOD1 and TDP-43 aggregates and clearly showed that they all aggregate in different ways in the cell.

This year Bec Brown was honoured with the Biological Sciences annual Hulbert award for her efforts at the Proteostasis Symposium - well done Bec. She was nominated by fellow student Luke McAlary who wrote a very poetic nomination. It should also be mentioned that Luke was nominated for the Meat Pie award for his efforts at Lorne 2014.

Researchers and the people they hope to help joined forces this week to raise awareness for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) at a research open day hosted by the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute (IHMRI).
The open day was part of national MND Week and the University of Wollongong-based IHMRI hosted people with MND, local support group members, clinicians, representatives from MND Australia, and others eager to address MND, a progressive, terminal neurological disease with no known cure or effective treatment.
