YeoLab Journal Club Schedule

Please note that CogNeuroJC previously held on the third Monday of every month will be subsumed under YeoLab JC from April 2020 onwards.

Participants should come with the paper printed out or available on a laptop. Participants should ideally have spent at least 1-2 hours to gain a basic understanding.

Presenter should come with answers to each of these questions:

1) What problem is the paper addressing? Is this an interesting neuroscience/mathematical question? Is this an interesting mathematical problem?

2) What other methods/algorithms are out there that address the same/similar problem? Do authors compare with other algorithms?

3) What is the application the authors choose (if any)? Does the application illustrate the approach well?

4) What are the strengths and weaknesses of the paper? Bonus points if you find a weakness the authors did not acknowledge.

5) How can the paper be improved? What are possible future directions of research (not necessarily related to your own research)? Are there new applications you can think of?

6) What would you do differently if you approached this problem?

7) Be ready to answer detailed questions about the paper's methodology, background, etc. A good level of understanding is "Can I implement the paper myself?" It is possible the paper is lacking in details, so it's impossible to implement yourself. But you should know exactly what details are exactly missing and you should at least try to fill in the details (e.g., "The details are missing here, but if I were the authors, I would do it this way").

8) Even though the presenter is expected to understand the paper in details, the presenter should try to extract the core idea(s) and explain that to the audience in an intuitive fashion. Even if the paper is math-heavy, oftentimes one might be able to distill the essence by using a toy example or a simplified version of the problem the authors solve (edge cases often make the math complicated, but are unnecessary to appreciate the point of the paper).

9) What is the implication of the paper? Is there a far-reaching theoretical result/insight? A novel neuroscience finding? Is there an accompanying open software package that others can pick up and use on their own data/problem?

Upcoming YeoLab Journal Club.

Title: Feather et al., Nature Neuroscience, "Model metamers reveal divergent invariances between biological and artificial neural networks". Presented by Yan Quan (Paper)

Abstract: Deep neural network models of sensory systems are often proposed to learn representational transformations with invariances like those in the brain. To reveal these invariances, we generated ‘model metamers’, stimuli whose activations within a model stage are matched to those of a natural stimulus. Metamers for state-of-the-art supervised and unsupervised neural network models of vision and audition were often completely unrecognizable to humans when generated from late model stages, suggesting differences between model and human invariances. Targeted model changes improved human recognizability of model metamers but did not eliminate the overall human–model discrepancy. The human recognizability of a model’s metamers was well predicted by their recognizability by other models, suggesting that models contain idiosyncratic invariances in addition to those required by the task. Metamer recognizability dissociated from both traditional brain-based benchmarks and adversarial vulnerability, revealing a distinct failure mode of existing sensory models and providing a complementary benchmark for model assessment.
