Fantastic Support for Proposed New Allotment Site at Good Stuff Fair
We were delighted by the fantastic response to our proposed new allotment site at the Good Stuff Fair, with strong interest and overwhelming support from visitors throughout the day.
Our stand was busy from before the fair officially opened until around 3pm, with a constant stream of people stopping to find out more about the proposed site, ask questions and discuss the plans.
The response was extremely encouraging. We did not receive a single negative comment, and everyone we spoke to was supportive of the proposal and enthusiastic about the opportunity to create a new allotment site for the local community.
The level of interest was particularly noticeable, with members of our team kept busy throughout the day talking to visitors. The interest was so great that conversations about the proposed site even continued while queuing for a cup of tea!
It was also encouraging to see interest from a wide range of people, including existing allotment holders, those already on the waiting list and residents from Wymondham and the surrounding area.
The event provided a valuable opportunity to explain more about the proposal, listen to people's views and demonstrate the potential benefits of providing additional allotment space locally.
The response at the Good Stuff Fair provided a very positive indication of the level of interest in the proposed new allotment site.
For us, it was particularly encouraging to see how enthusiastic people were about the prospect of additional allotment provision and the benefits that a new site could bring to the community.
We would like to say a huge thank you to Jenny, Tracey, Simon and David for giving up their time and helping to make the day such a success.
We would also like to thank Greening Wymondham, and particularly Jay, for organising such a fantastic event and giving us the opportunity to showcase the proposed allotment project.
Thank you for your support
The Good Stuff Fair was a hugely positive day for the project, and the feedback we received has given us even greater encouragement as we continue to work towards making the proposed new allotment site a reality.
Thank you to everyone who stopped by, asked questions, shared their views and showed their support. Your interest and enthusiasm are greatly appreciated.
We look forward to sharing further updates as the project progresses.
New Allotment Site – Project Update 18 September 2026
There has been significant progress with plans for a new allotment site in Wymondham, following our Open Meeting on 14 September and the Wymondham Town Council Planning Meeting on 15 September.
While there is still a considerable amount of work to complete, the project continues to move forward.
Please note: The proposals outlined below remain indicative. Until planning permission has been granted and the associated planning and highways requirements confirmed, the proposals may change. The final specification will also depend on the outcome and cost of the infrastructure tendering process and the funding available.
Proposed new allotment site
The proposed site is located just beyond the Melton Road/Tuttles Lane junction and is intended to replace the former Chapel Lane allotment site.
The current plans provide for approximately 190 plots, together with a 48-space central car park, including four disabled spaces.
The site would be secured by gated access and a 2-metre-high deer fence. Other proposed facilities include easy-access plots, bulk storage bins, a community storage container, a new community shed and emergency pedestrian access.
Three plot sizes are currently proposed:
Full plot: 24m x 10m
Half plot: 12m x 10m
Quarter plot: 6m x 10m
There will be no vehicle access directly to individual plots, although a designated delivery area will be provided within the car park.
Water supply
As there is currently no mains water supply to the site, the proposal is to install a solar-powered borehole and pump system.
The current working proposal is to provide each plot with approximately 1,000 litres of water every four weeks during the growing season, from April to September.
Four 10,000-litre storage tanks would be used to store water, with volunteers distributing it to plots at weekends. Additional 3,000-litre tanks would also be available in the central car park.
WAA is currently raising funds towards the water infrastructure. There is currently no plan to introduce a separate water charge for plot holders, with the intention that ongoing costs will, where possible, be incorporated into plot rents.
WAA and Wymondham Town Council
WAA and Wymondham Town Council are working together on the project, with responsibility for different elements of the development.
The Council is responsible for the land lease and basic infrastructure, including the access track, car park, perimeter fencing and initial plot boundaries.
WAA will be responsible for the water infrastructure, including the borehole, pump, storage tanks and water distribution system.
The final specification will depend on the costs received through the infrastructure tendering process. Volunteer involvement and keeping costs under control will also be important in determining what can ultimately be delivered.
Planning application
The planning application is currently being considered by South Norfolk Council.
Application number: 2026/2374
The current consultation expiry date is 29 September 2026, with an internal decision target date of 3 December 2026.
The full application and supporting documents can be viewed on the South Norfolk Planning Portal:
Members of the community who wish to comment can do so through the “Comments” tab on the application. Supporters are encouraged to submit their own individual comments explaining why they consider the proposed allotment site important to the local community.
At the Wymondham Town Council Planning Meeting on 15 September, all views expressed by members of the public were supportive of the proposed development. As the Town Council is the applicant, it was not able to formally vote on the application, but the views expressed will be recorded and passed to South Norfolk Council.
What happens next?
Subject to planning approval, work is expected to begin as soon as practicable.
The final timetable cannot yet be confirmed, but WAA's current working assumption is that the new site could be available to plot holders by early summer 2027.
The access track and essential infrastructure will need to be installed before plots can be occupied. Some work, such as hedge planting, could take place after the site has opened.
Previous plot holders will be given first refusal on plots, followed by people currently on the waiting list, with any remaining plots then made available more widely.
The current indicative rent discussed at the Open Meeting was £90–£100 per half plot per year. This is not a confirmed rent and will depend on the final costs and arrangements agreed between WAA and Wymondham Town Council.
Get involved
There will be opportunities for members and supporters to help as the project develops, including practical volunteer work, relocating materials from the former site and fundraising.
WAA continues to raise funds towards the project, particularly the proposed water infrastructure.
Good Stuff Fair – 3 October
WAA will be attending the Good Stuff Fair, organised by Greening Wymondham, at Central Hall on Saturday 3 October, from 10am to 4pm.
We will have a stand displaying the plans for the proposed new allotment site and providing information about the project, volunteering and fundraising.
We look forward to meeting members, supporters and others from the local community.

Wymondham Allotments Association Update 27 th July 2026
I am pleased to provide a further update on the progress being made towards
securing the new allotment site.
The Association continues to work closely with the Council on the planning
application. The Council has now produced a revised site layout incorporating the
mitigation measures required to address the issues raised during the previous
planning process. At a recent meeting, WAA suggested a small number of further
amendments, which the Council has indicated will be included. Overall, the revised
design remains broadly in line with the layout originally developed by us.
Detailed engineering drawings and specifications have now been completed for both
the access road and the car park. The access road will be 3.1 metres wide with
designated passing places, meeting the recommendations of the Highways
Authority. The centrally located car park has been designed to provide convenient
access while ensuring that the maximum possible area of land is available for
allotment plots.
I am also pleased to confirm that the new site, if approved, will provide more
allotment plots than were available at the previous site, helping us to meet future
demand.
We are still awaiting the Ecology Report, which is expected shortly. Once received,
all of the supporting documentation required for the planning application will be in
place.
The Council is currently aiming to submit the full planning application by the end of
the first week of August. Once the application has been submitted, the location and
proposed layout of the new site will become public. At that point, the Association
intends to hold an open meeting for all interested parties to present the proposals in
full, explain the next steps, and answer any questions. Details of the venue, date and
time will be circulated as soon as they have been confirmed.
Alongside the planning work, the Association continues to review and strengthen its
governance. Several new policies have now been adopted, and we are updating our
rules and procedures to ensure we are fully prepared for the opportunities and
responsibilities that a new site will bring. Our new Biodiversity Policy and Plan,
together with our Planning Justification Statement, will be included as supporting
documents within the planning application.
Thank you once again for your continued patience, encouragement and support
throughout this process. Securing a new allotment site has been a significant
undertaking, and the continued backing of our members and supporters has been
invaluable. We look forward to sharing further news with you as the project reaches
this important milestone.
Kind regards,
Kevin Stuart - Chair, Wymondham Allotment Association
