WiFi is great and provides a convenient method of accessing your broadband when browsing the web on a portable device, but it isn't always so good when you want to move large amounts of data quickly. Online gaming, media streaming or moving files between computers around the home is much faster, more secure and more reliable if there is a dedicated cable to carry the information.

If WiFi lag is causing PlayStation frag or streaming stuttering, or if it's taking an age to perform a backup between your laptop and desktop, then it may be time to go wired* and enjoy typical speed increases from 54Mb/s to 1000Mb/s**

It may be the case that you just don't like the idea of sending your data out into the airwaves on WiFi and prefer the increased security of a fully wired connection. Pricing depends on the length of the cable runs and whether you want it concealing within the wall, within trunking or clipped direct, however installation of communication cabling tends to be simpler and therefore cheaper than the installation of mains electric wiring.

As a side note, it is also possible to transmit data over your existing mains wiring using a pair of transceivers such as those pictured below. These devices allow you to zap signals between two mains socket outlets across the house and they provide a cheap alternative to having a dedicated cable between two points, but they aren't always suitable and will never be as fast or flexible as a dedicated signal cable. They work by encoding and transmitting the data as frequency bursts along the power line between the transmitter and receiver units, but their speed and reliability can be affected if they're on different circuits or if a 'noisy' load such as a washing machine or vacuum cleaner is in use. As a cheap and cheerful solution immediately available from off the high street, they may be worth considering if you want to avoid a dedicated cable installation.
