Oyster recycling is like giving nature a helping hand by collecting oyster shells from restaurants and returning them to the water. Just like recycling regular garbage, it's all about reusing materials to protect our environment. When you recycle oysters, you're actually giving back to nature because oysters play a big role in keeping our water clean and helping out the food chain. That's why our school is getting involved in oyster recycling and even creating our own special spot for it, called a VOG adoption site.
Our students contacted the following restaurants about participating in this program and they all responded with interest:
Harpoon Harry's
Malio's
Bahama Breeze
Jackson's Bistro
Edison's Food & Drink Lab
Zudar's
Oyster Catchers
Shell's Seafood
Ulele
The Sail
Once the city of Tampa determines a drop off location for oyster shells, we will be able to launch this initiative.
The photos below are examples of the promo materials that you will find in local restaurants that serve oysters. This community engagement component is designed to help spread awareness of our oyster recycling project, and encourage people to take actionable steps at cleaning our waters. Those who live along the bay can get involved further by adopting a vertical oyster garden (VOG). Each sign below has a QR code that leads to a form which explains how you can adopt your very own VOG and also how to properly deploy the VOG's in the bays near you. Other than our school, the restaurants are a great place to spread awareness about our project and communicate faster. These restaurants can also provide the oyster shells that we need to construct a VOG.
