Help support bay restoration efforts by purchasing a Tampa Bay Estuary specialty license plate (Tarpon Tag).
This specialty license plate depicts the unforgettable thrill of landing a majestic, silvery tarpon. Chosen as an emblem of Tampa Bay’s recovery
Did you know that oysters are not only a great seafood item but are good for our oceans?
Oysters have an ability to filter roughly 2 gallons of water every hour and they have a proficient ability to protect shorelines by slowing and taking the impacts of waves.
Recycling oysters once you finish eating them is our goal because even if only a few people start to it will encourage others to also and then we can start to see an improvement in the water quality of Hillsborough Bay and Tampa Bay.
Our journey has been hard, but we were able to persevere though challenges that were presented to our class.
We have had to deal with issues such as not being allowed to attend certain classes and places because of our age. Another issue was having to rely on other groups and teams that are related to our project to help get us certain supplies and grants that we needed.
When we faced a challenge, we worked though it as a group and were shown how every person had an important part to play.
This is why our Middle School Project Based Learning Program Rocks!
Cultural Heritage
Spanishtown Creek was Tampa's first fishing village community that existed in what is now the Hyde Park area. A stream by the same name runs through the neighborhood and empties into Hillsborough Bay. The stream is completely covered by concrete today and like the history of the first village remains almost completely unknown to most area residents today. A historical marker on Bay Street commemorates the history.
Our Memorable Strategy Statement: "Our strategy is to revive oysters, clean water, engage community and lead eco-friendly change for a healthier Hillsborough Bay."
Mission: Our goal is to help bring back oysters in Hillsborough Bay. We want to make more oysters, make the water cleaner, and protect against storms. We also want to tell people about local and global environmental problems and get everyone involved to make the bay cleaner
As a school: We want to be problem solvers who make our community and bay better. We'll plant oysters and get others to do it too. We want other schools to follow our lead and be more eco-friendly.
As a generation: We see ourselves as the ones who make a difference. We'll learn about environmental problems and speak up about them, making Hillsborough Bay better for the future.
As environmental citizens: We want to take care of our environment. By using oysters, we'll make the water in Hillsborough Bay cleaner. We'll teach others and inspire them to take action too.
We plan to improve the water in Hillsborough Bay by talking to important people like the Mayor of Tampa, our school principal, local businesses, restaurants, homeowners near the coast, the Everglades Foundation, the Tampa Bay Estuary Program, Tampa Bay Watch and the Southwest Florida Water Management District. We want to change rules and habits to help the bay, like getting restaurants to recycle oyster shells and encouraging other schools to join in. We also want homeowners to start their own oyster gardens, and we're hoping to get money and support from the city to help make all of this happen.

A LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE
For more than a century, Wilson Middle has established a legacy of excellence within South Tampa’s Hyde Park community. Consistently rated an "A” school, and nationally recognized as a "Blue Ribbon School of Excellence,” Wilson’s success is founded on rigorous curriculum standards. Our Scholar Quest high school credit courses give students a competitive edge in high school and college. Our electives include Orchestra, Band, Creative Writing, Art, Avid, Agriculture, and Aquaculture. Wilson students leave their own legacies in our community, through volunteer service and clubs. Students grow as leaders, becoming ambassadors on campus through our Student Success Program.
We went on a field trip aboard a boat and passed by the Skyway Bridge. This excursion exposed us to some of the nature and history of Tampa Bay. We saw how things wear down over time and enjoyed the beautiful bay waters. It was a great learning experience, and we learned a lot thanks to Mr. C.
We here at Wilson have land animals that we take care of like these bunnies. These bunnies help us learn how to be responsible and how to take care of livestock. This year we have encountered several surprises with these bunnies, but they are just so cute and irresistible. Our rabbits have had 5 kits so far and it's just the beginning.
These Tomatoes are just a small example of the many plants we have at Wilson. These plants inform us about the agriculture around us and why plants are so important. They also show us how to take care and treat things with respect. The plants have made a healthy environment around us and delicious food.
