The plant grow bed took the longest to build. We built this deep-water-culture system waist high so that it would be easy to access the floating grow rafts. The grow area 10 feet by 4 feet and supports 5 rafts at a time.
We sealed the grow bed with waterproof paint and a special liner that had to be folded and secured perfectly before adding water.
The Splash Grant gave us the resources to purchase water quality kits that enabled us to test dissolved oxygen, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, total dissolved solids, pH, electrical conductivity and more.
After testing the water flow and tweaking the system here and there the tank was now ready to add a variety of Florida Native & Food Security Fishes... errr, ummm and a few students.
Our aquaponic systems has Bluegill, Channel Catfish, Bluespotted Sunfish and Tilapia.
We were honored to have Katherine Munson visit our school and see the aquaponic system, the fish and the water quality equipment that we received from the Splash Grant. Kathy is the Lead Communications Coordinator for the Southwest Florida Water Management District
