The Waffen-SS was the military branch of the SS, Hitler's Elite Guard from 1933-1934. The Waffen-SS was tied with the Wehrmacht, and the SA, with their presence in the Holocaust, mass shootings of Synagogues, and anti-Semitist acts.
The Waffen-SS was responsible for supplying extermination and concentration camps during the Holocaust. During many battles, the Waffen-SS was a major part of the Wehrmacht, fighting in France, Poland and Russia.
After the SA was executed, making the SS the biggest paramilitary Nazi funded organization in Germany, the SS was to become not just Hitler's personal guard, but Germany's official military, commencing military operations across Europe and Africa, which gave rise to many Panzer Divisions similar to the Waffen-SS.
Although initially limited to 4 divisions, the Waffen-SS eventually fielded at least 20 divisions throughout Germany's military, which led to the vast majority of men in combat. By 1942 the SS was winning the war, just invading Russia but not yet succeeding. On top of it, German and Italian forces led by the SS were somewhat winning in Africa. But by 1943, the Soviet Union's Red Army was able to counterattack the invasion, just like the Allies in Africa.
Then by 1944, the Allies landed in Normandy, Omaha and Utah beaches in France, fighting against the Nazis. The SS decided to create some groundbreaking technologies that gave them a chance at winning the war. But the SS forces were overwhelmed. On May 9, 1945, the Nazis surrendered Berlin to the Allies.
By the time WWII ended in 1945 by Japan surrendering, the Allies had fully taken control of Germany, splitting the country into 4 occupation zones of the UK, USA, USSR and France, due to what happened in Germany after WWI, when the Nazi Party and many others rallied against the repression started by the Allies.
Josef Dietrich was Obergruppenführer of the SS Battalion and Generaloberst of the Waffen SS. Josef Dietrich was born on May 28, 1892, in Hawangen, West Germany before the German Empire.
Josef joined the Greman Army in 1911 and fought during World War I. After World War II, he joined the SA in 1923 and did jobs for the SA for a bit. When Josef rejoined the Nazi Party in 1928, he became a part of the SS Battalion and later commanded Hitler's personal guard unit.
He was promoted to Gruppenführer when he was elected as an actual party member. After a bit, Josef took place in The Night of the Long Knives in 1934. Which was a blood purge on the SA that Hitler ordered. After that, he was promoted to Obergruppenführer of the SS Battalion.
After the Allies invaded Normandy. He was promoted to Oberstgruppenführer, which is the highest general rank in the SS Battalion. He led the Sixth Panzer Division which was a part of the Waffen SS. He led the Sixth Panzer Division towards the end of World War II.
After many years of World War II and fighting for Hitler's Third Reich till the end. Josef Dietrich died on April 21, 1966, of a heart attack because of his poor health.
