And that's a wrap for all the credit cards we're going to open in 2025. This year we opened way fewer ones than in 2024, because of one key reason: Hyatt Globalist status.
See the graphic timeline for the overview and then below for all the rationale details and total points.
I cancelled my older World of Hyatt Business card in January. In February I qualified again for the bonus since it's every 2 years - so got the card again. The bonus came with 60,000 points and a free night award.
Even after the spend towards the bonus, we kept using this card for all our normal spending and manufacture spending so I could hit Globalist status this year. I knew at the start of the year we'd have fewer organic stays at hotels because of our new son. By the end of the year we will have put $40,000 on the card - giving me 20 qualifying nights towards status.
*Note, we are just counting the sign-up bonus and referrals - not any points earned through the normal spend.
We needed to build up a stash of Delta points for some upcoming trips. Plus wanted to save money on checked bags. We went with the Gold since the annual fee is waived in the first year and the business version to not affect Sarah's 5/24.
*But remember, Delta Skymiles are not as valuable as Hyatt points.
With biannual property taxes due, I tried to get another Ink card to utilize the 5x back at office supply stores to get Visa/Mastercard gift cards to pay. AND to capitalize on the 0% APR for 12 months. I got approved automatically and added another ink to my wallet. They wouldn't match me to the 90K promotion afterwards though.
And Sarah got 20,000 points for the referral bonus.
With the previous ink bonus complete and now having a 90,000 promotional bonus, it was a no brainer to try for another ink. With an instant approval it was like mining for gold again.
And Sarah got 20,000 points for the referral bonus.
To squeeze in another 90k ink bonus, Sarah applied right before the expiration so we could get those juicy points. Glad she qualified again - this is her third ink cash.
No referral points now because Chase has closed that loop.
The takeaway I want to leave with you are twofold:
You get the most points by taking advantage of sign-up bonuses.
You should have a thought-out strategy to best optimize your credit card churning.
