Every tutor comes to their own style with time; but there are a few time-tested steps to a session.
1. Introduce yourself - every tutor figures out their own way of doing this.
2. Some tutors ask how the student is doing that day to gauge where they are in their class and stress level.
3. Ask about the assignment and familiarize yourself with the requirements of the class/assignment. This is also where the tutor and gauge how much the student actually understands about the class and requirements.
4. Ask where they are in the project and what they would like help with. This puts the tutoring session in their hands and asks some participation on them claiming their own project. This can prevent sessions where the tutor does all the work.
5. Make a plan! With the student, lay out an agenda for the session.
6. Collaborate with the student to achieve the goals set in step 5. Keep the paper in their hands if at all possible.
7. Before you end the session, ask them if they have any extra questions and wish them a good day. Make ure you have filled out the tutor sheet with your notes. They keep the white and yellow copies for their own record.
