The purpose of this survey was to explore the responses of people on what they think of writing, and how they feel about the topic, with a total of 48 participants responding. The survey itself correlates with my website, which will provide useful information in regards to different aspects of writing. On the survey itself, it includes a good mix of different questions that aren’t too far-fetched, yet pokes part of your mind into giving deep thought on the topic itself. The questions themselves are a variation of written responses, yes or no questions, and multiple choice questions, made for you to freely use your mind on aspects that you potentially don’t touch upon often–or at all.
A majority of the participants viewed writing as a very important and useful tool go have in your arsenal, with the reasons varying, however a large percentage of participants argued that having fluent or even the basics of writing understood can bring you a long way in life in various different ways. One participant stated that “I think writing is the best thing to ever happen to humans. Writing really helps convey different messages and feelings and I think that’s just lovely.” While another one stated something similar, “Its very useful through out life, you can use it for emails , communication and more.”
As stated on the graph, a majority of people don’t really utilize writing on their free time, with the smallest percentage being 12.5% of people who write everyday. Few people have stated that they frequently write, with a majority of the participants mostly using it for texting or writing emails.
Participants were eager to state that their favorite aspects of writing were mostly grabbing the reader’s attention, using big words, conveying ideas and feelings through writing, or evening using it in an artistic sense and conveying a mass story through words. Participants would relate on the fact that they think writing is also best for getting their thoughts and emotions out, whether it be digitally or on paper & pencil. Various studies have shown that writing down your emotions and feelings can reduce stress, clear and ease the mind, build confidence, and even help on dealing with stronger emotions. Responses from the survey support this, as other participants describe how“calming and relieving it is to put your feelings into words on a piece of paper.” An article by “Habitbetter” claims that 77% of people who write often tend to get a better understanding of their person, their value and even self beliefs about their life. From the same article, they state that a study from Stanford University displayed that students who write down their values often performed better in class.
Over 50 percent of participants argued that written that has been generated by A.I is not considered writing. Barely 40 percent of participants in contrast to the overwhelming majority of people who voted no, do claim that writing generated by A.I is still considered as writing. As A.I is becoming more and more prevalent amongst society and even our personal lives, it’s being used for almost everything that we’ve done previously, such as writing essays for us, solving math equations, monitoring various things, and even being implemented in various pieces of technology that could advance humanity as a whole.
Writing in itself is a basic, yet advanced skill that many people across the world utilize in countless different ways. From writing letters to being the universal language we all can speak and communicate with. Writing could mean various things for each individual, as a way to convey feelings, enroll in a job, and write important documents. Every person has their own way of writing, and the survey assisted in letting the participants get a better understanding on their own style of writing.
