Professors

Prof. Danielle L. Cote, Ph.D.

Harold L. Jurist '61 and Heather E. Jurist Dean's Professor

Dr. Cote is an Assistant Professor in Materials Science & Engineering at WPI. She received her B.S. from the University of New Hampshire in Chemical Engineering and M.S. and Ph.D. in Materials Science & Engineering from WPI. She also worked as a research engineer at Saint-Gobain High Performance Materials in the Polymer Characterization research group.

Her current research involves:

Dr. Kyle L. Tsaknopoulos

Assistant Research Professor

Kyle has been a member of the Cote Research Lab since 2015, completing her Ph.D. in 2019 with her dissertation, "Computational Thermodynamic and Kinetic Modeling and Characterization of Phase Transformations in Rapidly Solidified Aluminum Alloy Powders," where she worked on combining advanced microscopy techniques with computational modeling to understand the internal microstructure of aluminum powders.

Prior to joining the Cote Research Lab, Kyle completed her undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering at WPI in 2015 where she spent time in Australia working with local underrepresented communities to bring regularly scheduled STEM activities into local schools. She also completed an internship at Bose Corporation in the Transducer Technology Group during her time at WPI.

Doctoral students

Kiran G. Judd

Materials Science and Engineering

Kiran is a Ph.D. student studying Materials Science & Engineering. He obtained his B.S. and M.S. in Engineering Science & Mechanics at The Pennsylvania State University. Kiran worked as a Research Assistant at the Penn State Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) from 2017 to 2021 researching the application of the cold spray process. He looks forward to unifying the knowledge gathered while serving ARL with the degree of understanding surrounding cold spray optimization that is maintained by the CRL.

Matthew A. Gleason

Materials Science and Engineering

Matt is a Ph.D. student in the Cote Research Lab. He has extensive research experience in the area of surface metrology with several publications in that area. He is actively involved in the robotics efforts in the group. Matt also volunteers for several annual STEM outreach programs at WPI.

Eva Piazza

Materials Science and Engineering

Eva is a Ph.D. student who joined the Cote Research Lab in October 2021. She completed her undergraduate Chemical Engineering degree at WPI in 2020 and finished her Masters in Materials Science & Engineering with the Cote Research Lab in 2021. Eva currently leads the effort between CRL and NASA to join shape memory alloys through cold spray additive manufacturing. She has also served as a TA for Intro to Materials Science and Metal Additive Manufacturing courses. Eva enjoys tutoring local Worcester elementary school students in science-related subjects.

Jason Langevin

Materials Science and Engineering

Jason is a Ph.D. student studying Materials Science and Engineering. He obtained his B.S. and M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Lehigh University. His Master's thesis investigated the effect of aging on the microstructural evolution, mechanical properties, and weldability of high carbon austenitic stainless steels. Jason looks forward to working with the Wire-Arc DED projects and building on his fundamental knowledge of materials science and welding metallurgy.

Caroline Dowling

Materials Science and Engineering

Caroline joined the Cote Research Lab in August 2023 after graduating from the University of Rhode Island with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. During most of her undergraduate studies, Caroline worked at Lucas Milhaupt in Warwick, RI, where she gained much of her metallurgical knowledge and passion. She recieved the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, providing her full funding to attend WPI. Caroline looks foward to beginning her Ph.D. research.

Ashton Lyon

Materials Science and Engineering

Ashton graduated from WPI in May 2023 with a B.S. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering after completing project work in thermofluids and materials processing topics. Ashton's Master's thesis investigated the effects of heat treatment on metal powders for additive manufacturing. He started his Ph.D. research in Fall 2023 and is interested in additive manufacturing for advanced aerospace and energy applications.

Stephen Price

Computer Science

Stephen is a Ph.D. student studying Computer Science, focusing on machine learning and artificial intelligence. He completed his BS in Computer Science from WPI and is pursuing his MS and Ph.D. in Computer Science at WPI. He has been working with the lab since his freshman year and completed several projects using computer vision, regression optimization, and clustering to improve the interdisciplinary application of machine learning for material science research.
