HISTORY OF BULGARIA

Bulgaria lies in southeastern Europe on the Balkan Peninsula. Its capital, Sofia, sits near the Balkan Mountains and is one of Europe’s oldest cities. Bulgaria was under Ottoman rule for centuries before independence in 1908. Today it is a parliamentary republic and a member of the EU and NATO.
