41st Workshop in Geometric Topology 2024

at Calvin University

from June 13 to June 15

Calvin University will be hosting the 41st Annual Workshop in Geometric Topology on June 13-15, 2024

Schedule

The workshop programming begins at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 13, and ends at noon on Saturday, June 15. Each day there will be a one-hour lecture by Principal Speaker Maggie Miller as well as contributed talks by participants. The program is designed so there will be ample time for informal networking among participants. The workshop ends with a problem session at noon on Saturday. For those staying until Sunday, we will organize an informal social event (TBD).

Principal Speaker: Maggie Miller

Principal Speaker Maggie Miller of the University of Texas - Austin will give a series of three one-hour talks on surfaces in 4-manifolds. Title and abstract below.

Surfaces in 4-manifolds

Abstract: Analogous to knots in 3-manifolds, surfaces in 4-manifolds carry much topological information. They can be used to construct exotic structures, study diffeomorphism groups, and yield new information about boundary knots. In my lectures I will give an overview of this area including recent developments in the field.

Contributed Talks

Participants are invited to contribute talks; time will be allotted each day for 20-minute talks by participants. Abstracts may be entered on the registration form or emailed directly to Nathan Sunukjian. Deadline to submit talk requests is May 20, 2024.

Financial Support

Financial support, provided by the National Science Foundation, will be available to cover partial travel and living expenses of participants who do not have other funding for their research. Such support can be requested on the registration form. To receive full consideration, requests for support should be submitted by April 20, 2024. Graduate students and recent PhDs in geometric topology are especially encouraged to apply.
