Wookey Parish Council is working with other local parishes to repair and replace the dilapidated finger posts in our area. Both the Council and members of the public would like to see these traditional signposts brought up to a good standard. The signs are the property of Somerset County Council who have no money to maintain them. As with everything these days the red tape specifies the materials and paints which have to be used and this is making the project quite costly. Volunteers will be needed to help Councillors Andy Tagg and Brian Livings who are heading up this project. If this is something you would like to help with please contact us.
Before
After
After many years of negotiating with Mendip District Council, Wookey Parish has finally secured the future of this delightful play area in the heart of Wookey village. Across Mendip many play areas were being considered for selling off. The Parish Councillors did not want to lose this site to yet more development and have now purchased this from Mendip. Some funding was secured and two new sets of swings have been installed. Work to trees has been carried out with one tree being felled. The Council replaced this with two new trees but unfortunately vandals struck and broke both in half. This has been reported to the police and if any has any information please contact us. It is hoped that more equipment can be installed in the future.
The playing field is home to junior girls and boys football teams and is kept in good condition and the Council are continually making improvements. With the last few years 840 saplings have been planted in the hedgerows to infill gaps and a copse at the north end of the field. A section of hedge approximately 100 yards has been laid in the traditional manner and it is hoped that each year the budget will include money to continue on an annual basis. Why not take a walk and a picnic this summer with the children and enjoy this facility.
