PhD (McGill), MSc (U of Alberta), BSc (Hanyang, S. Korea)
My research lies at the convergence of geoenvironmental engineering, environmental chemistry, biotechnology, and environmental materials science. I seek to advance our fundamental understanding of the physicochemical and biological processes that govern contaminant fate, transport, and transformation in natural and engineered systems affected by organic, inorganic, and mixed contaminants from energy, mining, and agricultural activities.
By leveraging new knowledge about these processes, I develop innovative, sustainable, and cost-effective technologies for environmental remediation, reclamation, resource recovery, and waste valorization. My long-term research vision is to establish mineral–microbial habitat engineering as a new paradigm for restoring disturbed environments in which nature-inspired habitats are designed to promote beneficial microbial activity and enhance ecosystem recovery in degraded lands and waters.
