WIOS was founded in early 2016 by chemosensory research scientists Valentina Parma (IT), Sanne Boesveldt (NL), and Veronika Schöpf (AUT). Since then WIOS has twice organized a 2-day symposium; in 2017 at the International School for Advanced Studies, SISSA, Trieste, Italy and in 2019 at Wageningen University, the Netherlands. WIOS has also organized speaker symposia during the annual meetings of the Association for Chemoreception Sciences (AChemS) and the European Chemoreception Research Organization (ECRO) and provided travel fellowship to attend ECRO 2021.
