Acquaintance and Chicken List Approach
This approach is to be used with people you know, but not as well as the first people you contacted in training.
“Hi ______! This is ______.... I’m not sure if you remember me, but (re-establish how they know you, etc.). The reason I’m calling is that I just started a great new job, and as part of my training I need to do some training appointments.
The reason I thought of you is….
Ex) You’re one of the most successful people I know, and I’d love your feedback
Ex) You’ve always given me good feedback, so I’d like you to know what I’m doing
Ex) I know you’re in sales, so I wanted your feedback
Ex) _______ says you’re one of the nicest people they know… is that true? Great, because I’m only supposed to see nice people…
It's actually a quick ZOOM call, it doesn’t take very long, and you don’t have to get anything. Of course, if you see something you like you can get it, but mainly I’d really like to get your opinion on me and the presentation I have for CUTCO.
Anyway, the reason I’m calling today is I really wanted to hit my goal of _____ more appointments before _____ and I was hoping I could schedule an appointment with you at _______, or would _____ at _____ be better for you?
Great! What email can I send the link to?
Now ______, could you just grab a pen and paper really quickly?
I know you would never forgot about me, but I’m having you write it down a few things because a couple of weeks ago I had this appointment with this really nice lady and she said she’d write it down after, but she forgot, then she forgot about our appointment. And when I called her she felt bad because it was putting me off track for my goal and I felt behind. But I know you wouldn’t do that but that’s why I’m having you write it down.
So our confirmation number is (SAY REP NUMBER) - and that’s just my rep ID code in case my manager calls to check up on my appointment. It’s ALSO your customer discount code just incase you see anything else you like, so don’t lose it!
Also, if you could just jot down that we’ll be on zoom on __(day)__ at _(Time)_. And my name, again, is _______. It's spelt - - - - - - . And since we haven’t met before you can draw a BIG smiley face so you know what I look like on zoom (chuckle)!
And other than that, I know this appointment doesn’t mean a whole lot to you, but it TOTALLY means the world to ME, so if you could just take that paper and stick it somewhere where you can see it…some people put it on their fridge, some people tattoo it to their forehead, most people just leave it in their kitchen, so that you DEFINITELY don’t forget about me! (“Because I would be totally heart-broken”). Thanks so much, I’ll see you __(day)__ at __(time)_
SMILE WHEN YOU DIAL
Setting Appointments with Referrals
Hi, ________?
Hi, _________, this is (Your Name Here). I don’t think we’ve actually met before, but I was talking with your (friend/mother/sister/etc.) __________ the other day. Did she get a chance to tell you I was going to call? Well, _________ and I were talking, and your name came up. She thought you might be nice enough to help me out.
I’m a student at ___________, and this __________ I’m working with a company to improve my communication skills and get some really great experience. If I do well, I can actually qualify to win a scholarship!
Okay, so your part is really easy. My assignment is to share a product with people that I’ve been personally recommended to and get their opinion on it, and most importantly, on myself and how well I’m doing. What makes it great is it doesn’t take very long, you don’t have to buy anything, and I get credit just to set up a virtual presentation. And ____ was really nice about it and thought you would be nice about it too. I really need _____ more appointments by _______, and I have an opening on (day) at (time) and at (time). Which time would be better for you?
Great! Thank you so much. And what would be the best email to send you a link to the virtual presentation? Do you have a pen and a piece of paper? Can you do me a HUGE favor and jot down that my name is _________ (spell your name out), our virtual appointment is on (day) at (time). This appointment really means the world to me, thanks so much and I can’t wait to meet you (day) at (time)!
School Directory Approach
“Hi, may I please speak with ______?
Hi ______, this is (your name), I don’t know if my name sounds familiar, but I graduated from (insert your school). How are you? (build rapport and create connection) Well, the reason I’m calling is that I was hoping you could help me out with a scholarship program that I’m doing for school, do you have a minute?
Great! Well I have this awesome job, where I get paid to do these quick presentations for people. The way the program works is all I have to do is show you a few products through zoom online and get your opinion on it. The best part is I get paid just for showing you, so you’re at no obligation to buy anything.
Most people from the area have been really nice and are helping me out, so I was hoping you would be too. I only have more slots to fill this weekend to hit my goal, and I was hoping I could schedule a time to show you on zoom at either , or would work better?”
Great! Thank you so much. What would be the best email to send you a link? Do you have a pen and a piece of paper? Can you do me a HUGE favor and jot down that my name is _________ (spell your name out), and that our appointment is on (day) at (time). This appointment really means the world to me, thanks so much and I can’t wait to see you on (day) at (time)!
VIRTUAL APPROACH
“Hi, _________, it’s ___calling… I don’t think we’ve met before, but I was actually just talking with your friend ______. Did she get a chance to tell you I was gonna call? Oh ok, well I probably beat her to it. (Prior customer’s name) and I were talking, and your name came up. She thought that you might be nice enough to help me out.
Right now, I’m a student at _______, and this semester I’m working with a company to improve my business and communication skills and get some great experience. And if I do well, I can actually earn a scholarship.
Your part is really easy. My task is to show Cutco to people like you that I’ve been personally recommended to, just to get your opinion on it and more importantly on me and how well I’m doing. What makes it even better is that the presentation is online over zoom, doesn't take very long, and you don't have to worry about getting anything because I get paid just to show it.
So_____ had a lot of fun and he/she thought that you would too. I actually just need ____ more appointments by the end of this week so I can stay on top of my goal.
All you would need is a computer with high-speed internet connection. I can actually do it _____ at _____ or would ______ be better for you? Ok great, thank you so much! Lastly, may I have your email address so I can send you the confirmation with the link?
Thanks a lot, this really helps me out! Do you have a pen and piece of paper with you? Ok, can you go ahead and jot down that my name is ____ and I will talk to you _____ at ______AM/PM. Can you also put a huggee smiley face next to my name, just so you have an idea of what I look like before you join the meeting!
I know it probably doesn’t mean a lot to you to help a college kid out, but it definitely means the world to me. Thank you so much and I’ll talk to you __________.
Leap Frog Approach
After putting the order in, getting and qualifying referrals (they have to purchase to offer additional free Cutco)
“Mrs. ______, I really want to thank you for all the time you’ve given me today and for the _____ people you’ve introduced me to. Of the people you jotted down here, who do you think might be home right now? Well there’s actually ONE more quick thing you could help me out with. I have an opening right now at ______ and I need to get just _____ more appointments today to keep on track for my goal this week. If you can set an appointment for me right it would SUPER help me out for this contest, and I will give you $40 worth of free Cutco for the help. Who should we call first?”
Have your customer call then you can jump after she introduces you.
Stress points:
1) They don’t have to buy anything
2) I get paid just to do the demo
3) There is no pressure and it’s a TON of fun
4) I get closer to the scholarship for just seeing them
5) If asked about the product—it’s CUTCO and it’s awesome!
Neighborhood Approach
Hey Mrs. _____ ! I'm your neighbor from just down the street, I don't know if you've seen me around at all? I live over _____ (by the railroad tracks, by the corner, etc. So, the reason I am calling is that I am a student at (SCHOOL) studying (MAJOR), and this (SEMESTER/SUMMER) I'm working toward a scholarship with a company and working on my communication skills at the same time. I am showing Cutco and the more people I show, the closer to the scholarship I get! The great part is that it's quick, fun, and easy and you don't have to buy anything because I get paid just to show it. I really need ____ more demonstrations to stay on track with my goals. So, would (DAY) at (TIME) or would (DAY) at (TIME) work better for you?
How long is this going to take? - Mrs. Jones, most people tend to really like me a lot, so I usually buy an unlimited zoom account, we do the first part for about 2 hours, then we watch a quick 90 min video and pick up where from there. JUST KIDDING, as long as you don’t like me TOO MUCH it shouldn’t take that long at all. If we cut down chit chat it’ll fly by!
Let me ask my husband - Definitely! Well, do you think the ____ or ____ time would be best for him, and we could just pencil in for now the best time. Just so I can stay in control of my schedule
Are you selling something/ What are you selling? - What I’m showing is a product called Cutco! Have you heard of it? a. If yes: Awesome! Do you have Cutco already!? b. If no: Ok! Well Cutco is a brand of high-quality cutlery and a few outdoor items. I’m sure you already have tons of knives, but I get credit to come over and show you.
Is this for school? - This is not a school project. But the company allows me to pay for school and also provides me with an opportunity to earn college credit towards my degree and a scholarship! So, would ____ or ____ work best for you?
I’m not really interested - That’s fantastic! That makes my job much easier! You don’t need to be interested at all because I get credit just to show you. This way, you’ll probably have less questions and we can get done faster! So, would ___ or ___ be better for you?
Can I/you call you back - Yes, I definitely can! But this part really only takes a few minutes. Do you have a quick min?
I’m busy - I completely understand! I’m pretty busy myself, so I love talking to busy people because they understand exactly where I’m coming from. But I promise I can make it real quick, and it’ll really help me out with this huuuuuugggeeee contest that I’m in. So, do you think you could squeeeezzzzzeee me in at ____ or would _____ be better?
Can you call before you come over? - I would love to call you Mrs. Jones, but I’m actually going to be out on a demo before ours, and I won’t have much time to call before I head over. Are you sure this time will work? I just want to make sure because this one time I drove out a whole hour to an appointment and they weren’t even there! I know you’d never do that, but I just want to make sure I have the best time in your schedule. So, is ____ going to work for sure, or is something like _____ a better time?
I’m leaving for out of town/ When I get back - That’s awesome! Where ya headed? I’d love to see you when you come back, but like I said, I’m in a HUUUGGGEEE contest right now, and doing well will help me towards a scholarship. So, could you squeeze me in _______ or _________?
I already own Cutco - That’s awesome! How much do you love it? Well like I said I get credit just to show it, I’m working SO HARD towards this scholarship, and you can probably give me so many tips that’d help me out. So, could I just squeeze in your schedule at ____ or _______?
Seen The Demo 100 Times! - That’s great! So you could probably do it better than me! 😂 It's all online and maybe you can give me some pointers. It would really help me out with my contest and scholarship chance. So would _ or _ be better?
I don’t need any new knives - That sounds perfect. That means you probably won’t have too many questions and we can make it SUPER quick. Like I said, I get credit just to show you, so it helps me out a whole bunch to just do the demo. So, could I squeeze in your schedule at ___ or __?
What is Cutco?
· - Cutco is a line of monster truck tires for minivans. _________ said you have the sweetest minivan and -you’d love to check it out. JUST KIDDING....
· - Cutco is a line of inflatable dart boards
· - Cutco is a brand of screen doors for submarines
· - Cutco makes human sized hamster balls
“Hi _____, you might not recognize my number but my name is __________. I’m a friend of ______ and she said I should give you a call. Sorry for not getting a hold of you. It’s not a random number or solicitor, just me (haha)! Hope to hear back from you soon. Thanks ______!”
“Hey_____, this is ___________. I’m friends with (first/last name). I saw her the other day because she was helping me out with something I’m doing to help with school and maybe earn a scholarship. She thought you might be nice enough to help me out too. If you could give me a call back that would be awesome. I can give you a try later on as well. Hope you have a great day ____!”
“Hi ________, this is _________, a friend of __________. I have a quick question. Give me a call back when you get a chance! Thanks!”
Hi _______! This is ______. Your (friend, neighbor), _______ said I should give you a call. Is there a better time to call back?
“What’s this about?”: I had a quick question in regard to a scholarship. Do you have time for a call? Full Text – Last Resort – Acquaintances (For call-backs and hard to reach acquaintances)
Hi _________, this is _________, (remind of relation). I've called a few times and haven't got in touch with you, so I thought I would shoot you a quick text. The reason I was calling is I have a job this summer/fall with Cutco. I’m definitely not just trying to sell you something (if you want to buy, great). But that’s not really the big reason. I wanted to try something different than what most HS/college kids do to build my resume and maybe earn a scholarship for college. I get credit to just show you the products and the best part is I do it over the phone, you just need to be in front of a computer. There’s no obligation to buy, just watch & critique me if you like! I’m trying to complete ____ this week. So I was wondering if there was any way you could squeeze me into your busy schedule. It would mean a lot to me and if you can spare about 40 minutes, you can call me or I can send you my open times. Thanks so much!

Hi ________. This is ________. I’m a friend of __________ and a student at _________. She/he thought you might be able to help me out. I'm not sure if he/she told you much about what I'm doing, but I'm basically doing quick presentations for Cutco to try and earn a scholarship for college and build my resume. You don't have to buy anything because I still get paid to just show it! And again, filling my schedule is the key. So I was wondering if you had some time to help me out. I do all my presentations over the phone. We can either set it up over text or you can call me, feel free to ask me any questions too. Let me know if you'd be able to help me towards my scholarship. Thanks in advance and have a great day!
