Formation and Naming of Withlacoochee Lodge
Withlacoochee Lodge (#98) was officially established in 2013 following the merger of the Alapaha Area Council and the Chehaw Council into the South Georgia Council. This consolidation brought together the Order of the Arrow lodges from each council—Alapaha Lodge (#545) and Immokalee Lodge (#353)—into a single, unified lodge. The name "Withlacoochee" was chosen to reflect the Withlacoochee River, a significant geographical feature that flows through the region served by the new council. The river symbolizes the coming together of different communities, much like the merger of the two lodges into one cohesive unit.
Totem and Symbolism
The newly formed lodge adopted the Gopher Tortoise as its totem. This choice was significant for several reasons: the Gopher Tortoise is native to the area, represents longevity and perseverance, and is the state reptile of Georgia. Moreover, active Gopher Tortoise burrows are present at both Camp Osborn and Camp Patten, the primary camps of the South Georgia Council, further tying the totem to the local environment.
Initial Leadership and Achievements
In 2013, members from the former Alapaha and Immokalee Lodges convened at the SR-9 Conclave to elect the first set of Withlacoochee Lodge officers. Despite being newly formed, the lodge made an immediate impact by earning the Conclave Spirit Award at this event, showcasing the enthusiasm and unity of its members.
Membership and Structure
At its inception, Withlacoochee Lodge had 351 chartered members, including over 200 youth. The lodge was organized into three chapters corresponding to the districts of the South Georgia Council, ensuring localized engagement and leadership opportunities for its members.
