4th-6th Grade Lesson
This lesson will teach 4th-6th grade what the Dewey Decimal classification system is and how to use it. The lesson will tie in perfectly and prepare them for an upcoming Read Across America class bingo activity that will focus on non-fiction titles.

1.3 Explain the organization of the dewey decimal classification system. Focus on the 10 classes' and divisions.

The Lesson

Welcome students to the library on our colorful rugs and begin Dewey slideshow once they are, "carpet ready".
After every slide, make sure students have understood and are ready to move on to the next slide.
Once slideshow is finished, hand out laminated Dewey Decimal bookmarks to all students. Each bookmark will be different. Each bookmark will list one main class with multiple divisions for the student to choose from. Students will select one non-fiction book within the classification stated on the bookmark given to them to check out.
Collect laminated dewey decimal bookmarks and hand out a printable dewey boomark for them to keep.
