Women in Physics and Astronomy (WiPA) began with a friendship. Our co-founders first met in their first year at UBC and quickly realized how much strength and support they found in each other, especially while navigating a male-dominated field. That friendship became a lifeline, helping us face challenges, celebrate milestones, and stay grounded throughout our degrees.
It was through that experience that the idea for WiPA was born. We wanted to create something bigger than ourselves—a welcoming community where women and gender minorities in physics and astronomy could feel seen, supported, and encouraged. A space to connect, share stories, lift each other up, and maybe even find the kind of lasting friendships that made all the difference to us.
WiPA is more than just a club—it's a growing network of peers and mentors who are here for one another, in science and beyond.
