Since the Norman Conquest in the C11th, the Manor has been held by the following families
Fitz Grip. Doomsday in 1086 notes the parish being held by Hugh son of Grip's wife. Hugh Grip had died in 1085. Fitz derives from the French "son of" sometimes being applied to illegitimate sons.
De Lincoln Alfred de Lincoln married the widow of High Fitz Grip in the late C11th.
Fitz Payne Another Norman family acquired many lands in the south west during the C12th. They were given a peerage in 1299.
Maltravers A Dorset family from Lytchett Matravers - Sir John Maltravers was knighted in 1306.
Stafford

The catholic martyr John Adams was born in Winterborne St Martin in about 1543
The politican Sir Francis Ashley was the main landowner in the area in the C17th.
