Summary
In the two years since he last spoke to his sister Natalie, Ryan Cirino has become a recluse who only leaves his house for work, college, and sex. The routine has served him well, so long as he ignores the persistent fatigue and acute loneliness. And he does.
When Natalie extends an invitation to brunch with her closest friends, Ryan wants to say no, but he wants his sister back more. Determined to make a good impression, Ryan heads to the club to find someone to help him blow off some steam and meets a man named Axe Harmon. Though he doesn’t usually go for nice guys, Ryan makes an exception and goes home with Axe.
Not even twelve hours after some of the best sex of his life, he finds himself shaking Axe’s hand across the table at his sister’s favorite cafe… after conking out on the man’s bedsheets, stepping on his cat’s tail, and dashing out in the middle of the night.
Natalie firmly plants herself back in his life, alongside new group of pals, a best friend he never saw coming, and a man who openly wants Ryan. A little at a time, Ryan learns what it’s like to feel less lonely.

To motivate myself to finish editing (LMFAOOOOOOOO) I once posted Pancakes on Archive of Our Own under the title "Hey, It's Automatic." It is now deleted, but I kept all of the comments I received because they mean the world to me. The core of Pancakes is still the same, though it's undergone a few more rounds of editing.

Throughout Pancakes, oftentimes unbeknownst to the reader, I reference a fair few alternate universes or alternate timelines I either wrote or explored related to the characters in Pancakes. Oftentimes these timelines have to do with Axe and Ryan. Some of them are fun. I spent a lot of time on them, so I figured there are pieces I can share.
Major Alternate Timeline:
High school boyfs: This was their original plot. They meet in high school. Ryan ended up moving and they lost touch. Axe eventually moves on, though he misses Ryan as a friend, and dates a girl named Kay. Ryan is a veritable nightmare child at the next school he goes to, falls out with Natalie, feels very sad, and talks to a guidance counselor about how much it sucks to have lost what felt like his first real best friend. Later, he has to reckon with the fact that he fell in love. They go their separate ways.
Friends with benefits: After the events of high school boyfs, they reconnect a number of years later and decide hooking up could be fun. Ryan falls in love (again?). Axe is still hung up on Kay. Ryan eventually confesses and says they should stop hooking up because he's catching feelings. Axe says, "Wait, I could also catch feelings if I felt like it, gimme a sec" and they try to make things work for a bit, but it's not sustainable. They go their separate ways, remaining distant but connected through social media like Instagram.
Slow n steady: After the events of friends with benefits, Ryan slinks around and feels like an idiot for falling for someone who was emotionally unavailable. He gets embarrassingly day drunk at a photography club meetup, smooches on a cutie named Daneil, and then tries to ignore him for the rest of his life. Daneil lost his first love/fiancee to a car accident a few years before meeting Ryan, and though he always had a feeling he liked men, he's never dated any. They are each other's second love and come together through a deep, mutual understanding of what it feels like to continue holding onto love for people who are no longer around. Ryan heals, but the first cut is the deepest, and there's always an Axe-shaped hole in his life that he can't find a way to (healthily) fill.
I hope after reading these selected alternate timelines you can understand why I finally said "I'm tired of this grandpa" and threw their history away to write happy, dumb, easy, low-sad Pancakes LMFAO
