This is why glaucoma is called the silent thief of sight!
About half of those with glaucoma do not yet know they have it. It’s important that we catch it before it’s too late! This is why glaucoma is called the “silent thief of sight."
Early on, people don’t even realize they have glaucoma. This is because it starts by making certain parts of your vision blurry. Later on, these blurry areas may start to become more noticeable only if you cover one eye or if you are in dim light. If glaucoma keeps getting worse without treatment, eventually people can lose their ability to read letters, and eventually can go completely blind. The problem is when you lose even a little bit of vision, you can never get that back.
On the other hand, some people may develop a certain type of acute glaucoma. “Acute” means fast and happening right now. This can cause severe eye pain, headache, blurry vision, redness of the eyeball, and even upset stomach and vomiting.
Acute glaucoma can be related to the shape of your eye or certain factors such as injury to the eye, certain medications, or steroid use. If you have these symptoms, please contact your local eye doctor or emergency room as soon as possible!
