Polocrosse is known as the king of the one-horse sports — and at Willow Pond, we know we wouldn’t be anything without our incredible horses. They are our partners, teammates, and the true heroes of the game.
Every day we work to prepare and care for them — from proper nutrition and conditioning, to cardio, training, and plenty of practice. Just as importantly, we love sharing them with friends, new players, and members of our community who want to experience the sport.
Meet the amazing Willow Pond Polocrosse horses, ridden and competed by our club members.
Their versatility and heart highlight what makes polocrosse so unique — one horse, one rider, and a whole lot of teamwork.
Lexi was the very first horse we ever owned, adopted from Maryland Horse Rescue when Lilly was just nine. Likely a Rocky Mountain cross, this golden pony has tried it all — dressage, jumping, cross country, and trail riding — but at heart, she’s a true polocrosse pony. If you’re playing No. 1 on Lexi, you’d better be ready for her wicked spin at the top of the D and be set to shoot, because she’ll put you right where you need to score.
Zara is a registered Thoroughbred and Lisa’s go-to mount, though she’s happily carried a few other players too. At just 14.3 hands, she’s tiny but mighty, quick on the field, and full of heart. Off the pitch, she loves hopping over cross-country jumps and heading out on long trail rides. Easy-going with a dash of “red mare” attitude, Zara is as versatile as they come.
Jay-Z, an Australian Stock Horse — the “breed for every need” — was Lilly’s first big step-up horse and a total surprise gift. The pair fell in love during a tournament, and after seeing how perfectly they clicked, his former owner knew they were meant to be together. With Jay-Z under her, Lilly has been able to focus on the game at a higher level, and together they’ve become a true dream team on the field.
Bundy is a registered Thoroughbred and a newer addition to our Willow Pond string. Quick, agile, and full of fire, he pushes the girls to sharpen their racket skills and think fast in the saddle. With everything moving at top speed on Bundy, every ride is both a challenge and a thrill.
Thea, a registered Thoroughbred, was a lucky find that seemed simply meant to be. Originally brought in as a project for Lisa, it didn’t take long to realize this mare had bigger plans — she wants to play fast and compete. A quick learner with heart and grit, Thea has embraced polocrosse completely. It looks like mom has lost her horse, but we can’t wait to see Thea shine at the upper levels in the future.
