Exhibit 17: Biography
Revision
For this revision, I wanted to create more blank, breathing space for the design. I shrunk the text body, the subtitle and the title, as well as the portrait on the right. I gave the text a wider border on the left, bottom and top. The portrait has more of a "border" on the right side of the canvas as well because the portrait is smaller and has more room to breathe before the end of the canvas.
Background
My wife is in the nursing program and was doing research into Florence Nightingale. She gave me the idea of doing a profile of this historical figure. I also wanted to do something I haven't done before in Photoshop and creating a two-tone portrait was something that interested me so I landed on the profile on Florence Nightingale.
Process
First, I created the portrait by taking a photo of her and going to the Threshold option. I cleaned it up a bit with the brush tool and masked her out of the background.
I added a splash of contrast and color with the orange title in quotes, which was a nickname she was given during the Crimean War. I used a box to visually separate the text from the body text. It also creates a bit of a larger gap between the title and body.
I created a strong left alignment for all the text, so the font and size change, along with the color change, create the contrast between the title and body.
The opacity gradient on the painting in the background adds more visual interest and context for the middle paragraph about the Crimean War.
