Gameplay Overview
Before we begin our campaign, there are a few important elements and guidelines to cover that will help streamline our gameplay and keep things enjoyable for everyone. Below, we’ll outline how character management works, how to interpret maps, the structure of the game, and some basic etiquette to keep things running smoothly:
1) Character Management
(Character Creation) Build your characters using Dice Cloud or other platforms. Once your character is ready and improved by DM, it will be imported into Foundry VTT. Additionally, the character's stats will be rolled alongside the DM.
(Leveling Up) You can manage leveling up, and other character updates on Foundry VTT. The party will level up based on campaign milestones, and every character will start at level 1.
2) Maps and Descriptions
(Visual Aids) Maps are there to enhance your gameplay experience, but they won't capture every detail. Listen carefully to the DM’s descriptions, as what you see on the map may not fully represent every aspect of the environment. Assume what you see on the map is generally accurate unless told otherwise, but don’t rely solely on the map for complete details about items or locations.
3) Game Structure
(Quest Focus) Quests will often involve fulfilling specific goals, with the world evolving as the game progresses. Expect longer-term story arcs and player-character-specific subplots to develop over time.
(Character Backgrounds) Your character’s backstory can influence story arcs and may lead to significant plot developments as the campaign unfolds. The party's past actions may very well resurface and impact future events.
4) Out-of-Game Communication
(WildWorld Hub) The website, despite it still being in development, will archive and help manage official campaign resources.
(Discord) The WildWorld: The Shattered Obelisk Discord server will be our hub for out-of-game communication, announcements, and discussions between sessions.
5) Party Ettiqutte
(Listen and Respect Everyone) This one is pretty obvious, but just in case, it needs repeating. Everyone is here trying to have a good time and play a game together, don't ruin it.
(Stay on Topic) It's easy to wander, and it's bound to happen. But try to stay on topic so we can keep things interesting! I'm not saying we will not have moments of humor, but don't be a consistent distractor.
(Don't Argue!) It's okay not to agree with the DM or with other players. You can express that within the game's parameters, but stopping the game to argue isn't appropriate.
(No Metagaming!) Pretty Obvious.
Table Rules
Before diving into the adventure, let's go over some table/house rules to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone at the table. Here's what you need to know:
1) Food and Drinks
Both food and drinks are welcome at the table.
Alcohol and smoking are allowed as long as it doesn't draw excessive attention or disrupt gameplay.
2) Phone Usage
Phones are welcome unless there is a boss battle or an important event in progress.
3) Retconning
Retconning (changing decisions) is situational.
Players can change their decisions before rolling dice, but no retconning is allowed after a roll.
4) NSFW Content
Any discussions or actions related to NSFW topics will result in a "Fade to Black" rule being applied, moving the scene forward without a detailed description.
5) Leveling Up
Level-ups will be based on milestones within the campaign, not individual XP.
6) HP Increases
HP increases are done via hit dice.
Players are allowed to reroll once if they roll a natural 1.
7) Encumbrance Rules
Encumbrance will be utilized during the campaign, so players should manage their inventory weight.
8) Critical Success/Failure
A critical success or failure (natural 20 or natural 1) during combat will result in doubled HP impact.
9) PvP (Player vs Player) Rules
PvP is restricted to fistfights only.
No killing of other player characters is allowed, and PvP should only be done for thematic or story reasons.
10) Late Players
Players have a 15-minute grace period. After that, the campaign will start without them, and absent players will be handled accordingly.
11) Campaign Cancellation
The campaign will only be canceled if two or more players are absent.
If the campaign is canceled due to absentees, a one-shot adventure may be played instead.
12) Absent Player Characters
If a player is absent, the DM will take control of the player's character for the session.
13) Homebrew Ruling
Homebrew ideas for classes, spells, or abilities are welcome but must be discussed with the DM before being implemented.
The DM has final authority on whether any homebrew rule is balanced or if it gets out of hand, can modify or reject it if necessary, and will respectfully communicate about such topics with the player or group.
14) Sharing the Spotlight
All players should share the spotlight during roleplay.
Interrupting or arguing with other players during their moments is discouraged. Let each character have their time to shine.
