The book presents a war time journal of a young man who after witnessing enemy invading his village in Poland, was forced to fight in a German uniform at the age of 18. While on his way to front in Italy, he deserted the Wehrmacht, and joined the Polish Army under command of General Wladyslaw Anders. After liberating Bologna, he traveled with the army to England. In 1947 he returned to Poland to join his fiancé, but for unknown reasons he married another girl.
