About us
Wieñ wongno was founded in 2025 to support primary school education in Doro, South Sudan. We believe that education provides a route out of poverty by providing children with knowledge and skills which will open up opportunities for further education and future employment. In particular for girls, it will empower them to become more equal members of their community, and provide them with an alternative to child marriage.
The primary school education project was started by the villagers themselves with the vision of providing their children with a better future. However, it is currently challenging for them to achieve this without support due to poverty and limited resources. Therefore we are walking alongside them to realise their vision.
We strongly believe that there is dignity in self-reliance, and that self-reliance is key to sustainability. Therefore, we are working with the village to support local projects which raise revenue for running the school. Our goal is for the school to be run successfully without our support in the near future.
The iris in our logo represents hope, faith, courage and wisdom; the same attributes the village has shown in pursuing a brighter future for their children in the face of so much adversity. In nature, irises are some of the first flowers to appear in spring; signalling a new beginning.
