Band Audition Information
The process is meant to be low stress.
The purpose of the placement audition is to determine the most appropriate level for the new band student to be supported and challenged.
There are two possibilities:
1. You have no experience playing a band instrument = no audition.
Simply sign up for the Honors Beginning Band class.
2. You have experience playing a band instrument = play a short audition.
Please be prepared to play a couple short selections that represent your level and that you are currently working on in your band program. These may be solos, band pieces or selections from a method book. You may also be asked to play some scales and sight-read.
Spring 2026 Audition Dates
Incoming Freshmen = Tuesday, March 17, 10am-1pm. (After the Language Placement Exam.)
Incoming 7th Graders = Thursday, June 4. (After the Math Placement Exam.)

The Whitney Young Band program has a tradition of excellence and offers students the opportunity to participate as a beginner or aspiring professional. Over 150 students participate in a range of concert and jazz bands. Students develop musicianship, creativity, professionalism, and leadership skills as they share experiences and build memories that will last a lifetime.
