Jazz Ensemble & Combos

The Jazz Ensemble is a curricular band that meets each day as a class. This is a top tier group with a small group jazz combo component. There is also an extracurricular Jazz program for less experienced jazz students that meets after school on Wednesdays.

Jazz students study and perform a variety of jazz and latin jazz literature and continue to advance their music theory knowledge and instrumental performance skills. Jazz styles and improvisational techniques are explored as well as the cultural and historical significance of this art form. Numerous concerts, contests and public performances are presented throughout the year. Students also have numerous opportunities to do professional gigs.

Whitney Young jazz students have performed at the Crescent City Music Festival in New Orleans, the Chicago Jazz Festival, New Trier Jazz Festival, Elmhurst College Jazz Festival, UIC Jazz Festival, Evanston Jazz Festival, and the famous Chicago Jazz Clubs Andy's and the Jazz Showcase. They are also members of the Ravinia Jazz Scholars and CYSO's Jazz Orchestra as well as the Jazz Institute of Chicago's Jazz Links Student Council and Women's Leadership Initiative. The Jazz Ensemble was recently honored to be a featured performance group at the 2019 Illinois Music Education Conference.
