Food

Feeding your rat the correct food is vital and there are lots of options to choose from, but some may not necessarily be the best.

I can recommend A Rat's Tail Food, Vetafarm Rodent Origins, Science Selective, Burgess and NZ Rat Rescue's lab blocks & combo mix. These can be purchased in most pet stores or online. We feed Science Selective & lab blocks from NZRR, in addition to our own dry mix to provide proper nutrition and some variety.

You can also create your own dry mix with grains, seeds and other yummy nibbles. Check out Ratclub's diet care for more information.

Avoid brands like Tui or Toflite which is full of seeds and not suitable for rats. These brands should be avoided as it's nutrition value is very low - it would be like feeding your rats junk food.

In addition to their dry food, you can feed fruits and vegetables as well as bits of your dinner. Just make sure they are safe for rats to eat.
