The Yale Farmhouse project was White Pine’s first Refresh. Our refresh service is meant for anyone who wants to upgrade their current home, creating a more cohesive and livable design. The process doesn’t involve knocking down walls or changing a home’s layout but includes changing things like flooring, hardware, furniture and decor to make your space feel brand new.
The client we worked with wanted to modernize their farmhouse but had concerns of too much change because of how long the home had been in their family. This was the house where the husband had grown up. The couple moved back from California with the intention of cleaning up the place to sell and quickly fell in love with the quiet peacefulness of the farm. Since he was a handyman of sorts, the husband decided to do most of the work, like the fireplace renovation, himself instead of calling in extra help.
We were able to keep the family’s favorite chair (the black chair in front of the windows) and upright piano. We also framed nature photos that were taken by a close family friend and hung them above the couch. We also ended up adding another arm chair at the end, the couple had decided they needed one more seat for guests.
The couch (found at article.com) and the coffee table (found on hayneedle.com) were some of our favorite finds for this project. The couch helped to give the room a more modern feel, while the coffee table reminds you it is still a farmhouse!

The fireplace in the living room needed a face lift but we saw the potential. To bring the fireplace back to life, we added a slab of leathered granite to the hearth. Leathered is a finish type available for granite. Other types are polished, which has a high reflection and a sleek almost glass touch, which is probably most familiar to you, or honed which is matte and smooth. Leathered granite is not considered smooth and has visible texture and no shine. This granite finish helped us to keep the rustic feel we wanted to hold on to. We then added a stove, a white mantle and cleaned the remaining exposed brick. The Mirror above has hung there since the couple can remember and still does, reminding them of the husband's mother who had hung it there many years ago. After painting the walls Agreeable Grey by Sherwin Williams the gold frame seemed to shine brighter. Along with the other changes - everything felt just right.
Check out the before and after!

The couple we were working with wanted a cozy place for family to stay when they were in town. The guest bedroom was already bright and sunny and had some great furniture. We ended up keeping the original bed, dresser and fan. We freshened it up by adding new bedding, pillows, a fuzzy throw and a few decorative pieces for the dresser. We ended up scouring the shelves of TJMaxx and HomeGoods for some great and reasonably-priced finds!

In addition to the pictured areas, we also helped the owners with minor touches elsewhere in the home, like new paint color and cabinet color in the hall bath, as well as choosing a light color granite for the counter and a new arm light for above the sink in the kitchen.
We had so much fun working with our clients during this project and seeing how excited they were with our results. It is really amazing to see how much can be done with an existing space. Maybe you have tried to rearrange or touch up a room yourself and something doesn't seem quite right. Give us a call & leave the rest to us!
Best Wishes,
Haley & Hannah
