Three former public school teachers turned full-time moms founded Illumination Cooperative Learning, Inc in 2024. The trio wanted to create a hybrid co-op experience that provided the best they remember from their public school days combined with the flexibility of homeschooling and the inspiration of the Christian ethos.
Our Founders
The only one of the three founders local to the central Maryland region, Nicole grew up in the Mount Airy area. As an adult and while staying at home with her children, Nicole finished her Masters of Elementary Education in 2020.
Nicole and her husband John enrolled their oldest son in their local public school immediately following the pandemic. After his Kindergarten year, Nicole and John made the decision to begin homeschooling their oldest along with the rest of their four children.
Nicole enjoys having the ability to be a part of her children's learning adventures, giving her the opportunity to meet their individual needs every step of the way.
Breana is a seasoned educator with over 10 years’ experience teaching in both traditional and homeschool settings. After graduating with her Masters in Teaching from the University of Virginia in 2009, Breana taught in public and charter schools for 8 years until she became a mom, at which point she decided to stay home with her children.
Breana and her family moved to Frederick, MD in summer of 2020, at the height of the pandemic. Between their newness to the area and the disruptions to school systems at that tumultuous point in time, Breana and her husband Rick chose to try homeschooling. Since then they have come to trust in the power and potential of homeschooling and believe that homeschool co-ops offer an incredible opportunity for their children to jointly explore their passions while receiving a well-rounded education that will position them for success.
After graduating from Slippery Rock University in 2007 with a degree in Elementary Education and Special Education, Kelly spent 8 years teaching in the public schools in Maryland and Virginia. Kelly spent her career teaching students with a wide array of disabilities.
In 2013, after having twins, Kelly made the choice to become a stay at home mom. Time would tell that the twins would have severe physical disabilities. Kelly, along with her husband Jeff made the decision to homeschool the boys due to their lifestyle of having frequent appointments and many that required travel. After witnessing first hand the positive experiences of homeschooling and the flexibility it provided, Kelly and Jeff decided they were in the homeschool game for the long haul. Kelly has been homeschooling her children for the last 3 years.
