In Case Study 3 we focused on the things we observe in our local community and the things we see on our walk to school. We discussed natural and man made features and also used stories to discuss the different landscapes, religions and ways of life around the world.
Due to COVID-19 we were unable to invite visitors or explore the wider world using local walks and visits but the children were provided with a ‘nature guide’ which signposted them to areas of the local community that they could use to explore further such as the local park, Thorne Community Wood, the Canal or their own neighbourhoods and gardens.
The children designed and created their individual final products through collaborative and individual art. The children made a seasonal 2021 calendar to showcase their learning during this expedition. The children decided how they would dress during each of the seasons and we photographed them and displayed their 4 photographs on their own personal calendar.
In Case Study 3 we have focused on the following objectives:
I can remember and talk about special times or events for my family and friends
I can join in with family customs and routines
I can describe my immediate environment using knowledge from observations, discussion, stories, non-fiction texts and maps
I can maintain attention and participate actively in collaborative conversations, staying on topic and initiating and responding to comments
Our weekly guiding questions to help us explore further were:
What can I see on my journey to school?
The children decided to create maps of their local area and considered what Remembrance Day looks like within our community
How is Diwali celebrated?
The children decided to explore further the art element of Diwali and were highly engaged in rangoli and mendhi patterns
How is Africa the same/different to where I live?
The children explored the story of Handa's Surprise by creating landscapes and clay mud huts. The children compared these to other houses around the world including their own.
