1. Do I have to be in a particular discipline?
No. Students from ALL Wharton and INSEAD doctoral programs are encouraged to apply, if their research proposal is relevant to the common theme of the Consortium in business studies.
2. Am I too early/late in my program to apply?
We welcome applications from students at any stage of their program. Our only requirement is that you are in your second year or above of the INSEAD or Wharton doctoral program in the autumn of 2022 (e.g. not graduated or first year).
3. How many students will be accepted to participate?
We do not have a fixed number, but this year we are aiming to accept around 35 students. We will try to ensure that about the same number of students participate from Wharton and from INSEAD; we will also try to ensure a fair split between Fontainebleau and Singapore.
4. Do I have to have a finished paper ready by the date of the Consortium?
No. We expect students to be presenting work in progress. There is no requirement that you have a finished paper ready. Ideally, the Consortium is an opportunity for you to “test out” a project that will be used to fulfill a program requirement (such as a second-year paper, or a piece of your dissertation), that you intend to present at a major conference - but any original work is welcome!
5. What else can you tell me about what you are looking for?
We are looking for any original work that is relevant to management science. You might want to keep in mind the diversity of the Consortium (in terms of disciplines, methods, and research questions) and think about how your project will spark conversations and interest among Consortium participants and faculty attendees. Successful applications will have a clear motivation, research question, and empirical approach. Theoretical papers will also be considered.
6. Should I select the 15-minute or the 30-minute format?
That is really up to you, how far along you think your project will be by the time of the Consortium, and how comfortable you are presenting it.
7. Does the Organizing Committee decide who gets accepted?
No. All applications will be submitted to a double-blind review process. Reviewers will be other applicants (yes, by applying, you are committing to serve as a reviewer) as well as other volunteer reviewers. Reviewer and applicant will never be from the same institution (all Wharton applications will be reviewed by INSEAD reviewers, and vice versa).
8. When and how can I apply?
All applications must be made electronically. The application form on Qualtrics will close at August 15st (23:59 EST).
9. I’ve missed the deadline; can I still apply?
No. The deadline of Monday, August 15st, 2022, at 23:59 EST will be strictly enforced.
10. I’ve emailed you my application instead of using the application form in Qualtrics, will my application still be considered?
No. Please use the application form as it provides important information about your proposal that will help match your proposal to appropriate reviewers.
11. How will COVID-19 impact this year’s Consortium?
The plan is to have the Consortium fully in person unless local health guidelines prevent this from being possible. An in-person conference is the best way to maximize dialogue, the exchange of ideas, and valuable feedback. Should COVID make it impossible to hold the consortium in person, we will transition to an online format using Zoom. If you believe you will have visa issues due to COVID travel restrictions, please get in touch with the Organizing Committee - we will work with these issues on a case-by-case basis.
12. What will I be reimbursed for?
All accepted INSEAD-Singapore students will be reimbursed up to 1200 US dollar for round trip travel to Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). All Accepted INSEAD-Fontainebleau students will be reimbursed up to 1100 US dollar for round trip travel to Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). It is highly recommended that you book your flights directly using INSEAD’s budget through Egencia, INSEAD’s travel platform. Please see Question 13 for instructions on how to book the flights. Only economy flights will be reimbursed, in accordance with INSEAD-Wharton Alliance policies. Once notified of your acceptance, please book flights by September 13th to ensure the lowest rates and to guarantee reimbursement. The Consortium will also cover a three-night hotel stay the for the nights of October 12th – October 15th at a soon to be announced hotel. Finally, food and beverages and social events will be covered for all participants.
13. Instructions on how to book your flight.
Log in on the Egencia website with your INSEAD credentials.
Select your desired* trip and the economy fare
Add your traveller’s information and select “Paid By My Company”
Enter the budget number “2399-339”, the billing entity “FBL” and the sub-section
“11th Annual INSEAD-Wharton Doctoral Student Consortium”.
*Students are allowed to originate travel in a European city other than Paris if the airfare is equivalent to, or less expensive than, the ticket from Paris to PHL on the actual dates of travel. Moreover, the student must provide justification of the two airfares (actual city of departure to PHL, Paris to PHL) for their actual dates of travel. The student will be reimbursed the lower of the two airfares if neither exceeds the cap. The student is allowed to travel to Newark Liberty International Airport or another nearby airport instead of PHL and have the train tickets reimbursed if this round-trip safes costs compared to the trip to PHL. Students who will optimize this trip to attend the INFORMS conference in Indianapolis will be reimbursed either the equivalent of a round trip economy class ticket from PAR/SGP to PHL for their dates travelled to/from the USA, or the cap – whichever is less. Students will be required to provide justification of the airfares for reimbursement purposes.
14. I still have a question.
In that case, please get in touch with a member of the Planning Committee from your institute, and we will do our best to answer it!
