I specifically chose this episode on Mary Church Terrell because of her role as an African-American woman who engaged with both the suffrage and civil rights movements. This year is the celebration of 100 years of white women getting the right to vote, but we often forget about the struggle that black women continued to face fighting for their suffrage. Considering the racial injustice that has been taking place around the country with the deaths of Black Americans like George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, I wanted to highlight a woman of color who had these issues of racism and sexism intersect within her life.
