More about us

Westmorland Croquet Club is a member of Croquet England and of the North West Federation of Croquet Clubs.

We play on lawns at historic Levens Hall, 6 miles south of Kendal. There are 2 full-size croquet lawns and 1 half-size "short lawn".

We play croquet in both its forms,  Association Croquet and Golf Croquet. We have use of the lawns throughout the Levens Hall opening season, running from March to October, Sunday to Friday every week. Golf Croquet offers an easy-to-learn form of croquet with games generally lasting less than an hour, played as singles or doubles matches. It lends itself to social play.  Association Croquet is a more challenging form, generally played as singles though it can be played as doubles, with full-lawn matches lasting up to 3 hours, and the short lawn version up to 1½  hours. Both forms offer a degree of physical exercise, a mental challenge, and playing skills develop with practice.

Men and women play as equals and always have done, and a handicap system means one can play with others of different expertise.

Our Golf and Association Croquet teams play in leagues organised across Cumbria's four clubs and the whole of the North West region, and can compete to play in national competitions, or enter festivals. Individual players have the opportunity for play in various tournament competitions.

Each year we also run a number of internal club competitions throughout the season and on special club days, competing for a dozen or so club trophies.

Funds are largely raised though membership annual subscriptions augmented by social and fund-raising events. Volunteer effort means we are efficiently run and and offer excellent value as a recreation and as a sport.

We welcome newcomers and will arrange taster sessions to introduce you to the game and the club.
