Social Play refers to informal, recreational games typically focused on fun, camaraderie, and inclusivity. All skill levels are welcome. Players rotate in and out of games, and the emphasis is on enjoyment, exercise, and meeting others in a relaxed environment. A great opportunity for players to challenge themselves against stronger players and stronger players to slow down their game and practice controlled shots.
Beginner Play is for individuals who are new to pickleball or are still developing the basic rules, strokes, and strategies. These players may:
- Miss serves or returns regularly
- Struggle with court positioning and reaction
- Have limited understanding of scoring and rules
- Be working on consistency and shot placement
Skill Level: Typically 1.0 to 2.5 on the pickleball skill rating scale.
Intermediate Play involves players who have a solid grasp of the game’s fundamentals and are developing more consistent skills and strategic awareness. These players typically:
- Consistently serve and return the ball
- Understand and apply basic positioning and shot selection
- Perform dinking and controlled volleys
- Can select placement of shot with fairly consistent results
- Starting to use advanced techniques like spin, drop shots and lobs
- Are familiar with the non-volley zone (kitchen) rules
Skill Level: Typically 3.0 to 3.9 on the rating scale.
Advanced Play includes highly skilled and experienced players who demonstrate strong strategy, control, and athleticism. These players:
- Have excellent shot consistency and placement
- Use advanced techniques like spin, drop shots, resets and lobs
- Anticipate opponents’ moves and exploit weaknesses
- Display flexibility and reaction time to return low shots at their feet
- Display physical ability to move about the court quickly
- Recognize how to move in relation to their partner for best defense
Skill Level: Typically 4.0 and above.
