In Nov 2024, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in a street redesign community event in Oakland Chinatown! It was such a joy to see the streets buzzing with energy, ideas, and a sense of shared purpose! As a local resident, I also created three immersive VR simulations for the proposed street redesign visions on 10th Street using Streetmix and 3DStreet. Events like these remind me how public spaces can bring us together. They inspire us to reimagine what our streets can be—a place for everyone to belong, connect, and thrive.

Thanks to Mr. Kieran Farr's introduction to the wonderful open-source street mockup tool 3DStreet.org, and also the 2D street design tool Streetmix, I was able to take the existing redesign plan concepts and develop a few design alternatives for 10th Street between Webster and Harrison. Stay tuned, we may be able to show some of these cool VR/AR stuff in the upcoming community events!
In early 2025, the City of Oakland completed the construction of protected pedestrian crosswalks and buffers, which turned out pretty nice. Here are some photos showing people using the crosswalks and the extended islands for more pedestrian space vs car travel lanes.
