High schoolers need their own separate space. Their informal learning is primarily social with different needs to be both together and apart.
The first task is to clear out the old reference texts. These are outdated information and never used. They will be replaced with informal seating for students to use. Other popular fiction and graphic novels will be offered. Work stations have been created around the walls where the bookshelves were, to allow for independent work. Round tables are needed for group work.
Students can use their own devices for research in the media center, but there are additional desktops assigned to a printer. New charger stations and iPads are available for student use. The old computer lab is being converted into a maker-space with digital photography and a brand new 3D printer. The lab will also have computers that handle editing and advanced media production.
"Don't focus on minimums. Free students to climb far beyond what they usually think possible. Working together with staff in the open commons we can guarantee the outcomes will be far superior to whatever the teacher could have done alone in the classroom." Loertsher & Koechlin (2015)
