Theodor Seuss "Ted" Geisel was an American children's author, political cartoonist, illustrator, poet, animator, screenwriter, and filmmaker. He is known for his work writing and illustrating more than 60 books under the pen name Dr. Seuss.

Boring school primers were said to be a major cause of children not wanting to read, and this challenged Dr. Seuss to “write a story that first-graders can’t put down,” while using only 225 words chosen from a list of 348.
