This unit focuses on basic mathematical skills.
In Heriberto's Welding Shop, students calculate payroll, technical training and materials costs. Resources include a blog post about the importance of math in welding and the outline for a project that compares two materials, steel and aluminum, as well as a ready-made product. They can then analyze the energy inputs to determine whether a built product or a ready-made product is the best choice.
Learners will also hone their measuring skills, use a tape measure, perform operations with fractions, and apply related vocabulary. Instructors can adapt a Scavenger Hunt in the worksheet to fit their nearby learning space, something the students really enjoy!
Read for comprehension, guess meaning from context, and use an online dictionary to apply relevant definitions
Become familiar with mathmatical terms related to calculation and problem solving
Use basic calculations to compare prices, make a materials list, and produce final cost estimates
Analyze finished products to determine the best option: build or buy
Speak to be understood and listen actively to peers
Read a tape measure to calculate dimensions of common objects
Reviews present real conditional
