My name is Nanci Leiton, and I teach English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) to adults from around the world. I design interactive, multimodal lessons that build on students' existing knowledge through practical, engaging activities. I make intentional efforts to find or develop content that is diverse, relatable and current. As a language instructor, I work alongside my students to help them realize their immediate goals and plans for the future.
My aims are to encourage self-sufficiency, develop critical thinking skills and foster curiosity in learners. In my classroom--be it physical or virtual--students enjoy a high-interest, collaborative learning environment where they can strengthen their self-confidence and spark their internal motivation.
The materials presented in this OER reflect my teaching approach with adult learners, Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself, a Chinese Proverb. I design tools that build skills and provide opportunities for guided practice, and then I cheer my students on as they navigate the portal to their success!
I bring the knowledge and experience of more than 25 years in the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. I've taught in intensive language programs, volunteered with community-based, low-cost language classes for migrants and refugees, and lectured in university graduate courses. But I've spent most of my career working with first-generation residents with developing English skills. I teach in-person and remotely and enjoy both modalities.
