Recycling Center Upgrade

Our Goal

We want to remodel our Recycling Center, because it is very out dated and plain. If we have a bright and exciting place where people can recycle, the community will want to bring all of their recyclable goods here instead of a old fashioned bin that you throw cans and other items into.

The Plans

When we decided to build a rain garden, we noticed that the playground equipment was in need of an upgrade. We researched an idea of using recycled materials to show the community what new items can be built from materials that might just get thrown away. We are also looking to increase our help with the Robotics team and raising money for their contests. This lead to the idea of Redoing the Recycling silo. We asked for ideas from the community / staff and chose a rustic cabin idea. Walnut Grove is the home of Laura Ingalls Wilder and it seemed like a great tie in. We will make a colorful little building that will store the recyclable items and it will be self sufficient by using solar panels, then we would surround the building with recycled art work, a recycled walk way, and learning kiosks that future YES classes can use to promote ideas about recycling or saving electricity.

This is a multi-year project and we have contacted the Building Trades class for help in building this. It is slated for building next fall with the rain garden. We have also contacted the sculpture class and the teacher is looking at recycled art and we are now designing pedestals for this.

Personal Reaction

We as a class are pumped to start this project! It will let some people show their artistic side, and others their constructive side. Though, for most of us it is a hard thing to ponder. Stay tuned for this project, it will be a good one!
