Community Talk

On April 4th, six Earth Yes students had a community talk that was free and open to the public. We taught all those in attendance a few cheap easy ways to help save money on heating , energy, and water. We also gave away objects to help them start making a cleaner, safer, and cheaper house ( Ex: low flow shower head, smart surge protectors, LED lightbulbs, and outlet insulation ). One thing that most of the adults didn't know about was their ceiling fan. What they didn't know was that it can be used during the summer and winter by simply switching the direction on the ceiling fan.

Goal setting and Teamwork:

Our goal is to help people understand new, inexpensive and simple ways to save money around the house. We worked for over 10 hours to prepare the 45 minute speech. Each student picked one area to research and master. This way we could be ready for any questions and make sure that the public had a wide range of ideas.

Community Engagement:

The Earth Yes class wasn't the only ones helping getting the word around about the community talk. We advertised in the local newspaper, on the local TV station (a simple scrolling screen) and social media (facebook, twitter, and instagram) . The local Utility company was wonderful enough to DONATE 2 dozen LED lightbulbs for giveaways.

RESULTS and DATA

We ended up having 15 people show up and each one got two LED lightbulbs and anything else we showed them while during the presentation.

Personal experience

I was one of the students presenting to the community and I'm gonna tell you what I thought of it . What I thought was pretty amazing was that I could stand and talk to grown adults and have them actually listen to what I had to say. They were there to listen to us high school students. That felt pretty special. Even after the presentation I had people come up to me and actually thank me for the tips and ideas.
