A website design proposal scope of work (SOW) is the countable part of the offer: what you will deliver, in what order, and what sits outside the selected tier. Autocomplete demand for this exact phrase can be thin on some days; freelancers still need the section because vague scope is how unpaid extras start.
What belongs in the SOW section
Phases with countable outputs. Discovery / sitemap, design concepts and revision rounds, build of named templates or pages, content support limits, QA / launch, optional training.
Inclusions written as nouns you can finish. “Up to eight inner page templates, one design direction plus one revision round,” staging plus launch checklist not make the site great.”
Exclusions with the same clarity. Unlimited revisions, full copywriting, stock photography budgets, third-party app setup, SEO retainers, and hosting account ownership are common misses under deadline pressure.
Client responsibilities. Content freeze dates, feedback turnaround, who supplies brand assets, and what pauses the schedule if inputs are late.
Change triggers (non-legal). How new pages or features get estimated after kickoff. Keep this operational: a short change-order ritual, not attorney language.
How SOW differs from a contract
The SOW explains the work. A contract (MSA / services agreement) is a separate legal instrument. A proposal pack can include an educational sample-terms stub, but SiteScope is not a law firm and does not create an attorneyclient relationship. Prefer a clear SOW plus a next-steps summary if you do not want terms language at all.
Practical sequence
1) Duplicate your master proposal pack for this lead.
2) Fill intake before you promise page counts.
3) Choose a pricing tier; let the sheet recalculate.
4) Write inclusions and exclusions while the call is still fresh.
5) Export PDF; attach pricing if helpful.
Who this is for: freelance web designers and tiny studios who need a reusable SOW block inside website proposals.
Who this is not for: enterprise RFP teams or anyone seeking a lawyer-drafted agreement.
