Composer Notes and Musical Content
This text is a “call to action” and is set in a fugue. There is a “march” feel to the music that should be accompanied
by foot taps (keeping heels on the ground) performed by the choir, instrumentalists, and audience members. Why a
fugue? By staggering the entrances of the voices and instruments into the musical texture, I hope to symbolize the
idea of people from different backgrounds and perspectives coming together to unite around a common purpose.
The fugal structure also makes it possible to amplify Rankine’s concept of “disordering the disorder.”
