National Conference Travel Support
WCUCOM students in good academic standing are eligible to apply for a travel award of up to $1,300 for the purpose of presenting a poster or oral presentation at a national conference. The applicant must be the presenting author, normally the first author, of a poster or oral presentation, and must acknowledge WCUCOM as their institutional affiliation, regardless of whether there is a secondary institutional affiliation. Secondary authors will not be funded. Travel requests must be made in advance of the travel, preferably at least a month ahead. Applications made after the conference has occurred will not be considered. This form may also be used for virtual conferences.
Eligible expenses include student registration, lodging, airfare/mileage, airport parking, airport transfers, and poster printing.
Funding for travel does not excuse a student from mandatory attendance, assignments, or exams that will be missed by travel. Absences due to conference travel are not usually excused. Please consult with your course director before applying for travel support.
Travel grants are competitive and subject to the availability of funds; submission of an application does not guarantee financial support. Students should review eligibility requirements and submit the Travel Grant Application before making travel arrangements.
A student can receive no more than two travel grants during their tenure at WCUCOM. Funding will not be provided for previously presented scholarly activity. Travel for scholarly activity completed prior to admission is the responsibility of the former institution.
Beware of predatory conferences. Conference travel to events that are not associated with reputable medical societies will not be funded. Be prepared to justify conference choice when you complete the linked application.
Poster Printing & Reimbursement
Poster Printing
Students presenting research at a conference or other scholarly event are responsible for ensuring that their poster meets the specific size, formatting, and submission requirements of the event. While 36 × 48 inches (36 inches high × 48 inches wide) is a commonly used poster size, requirements vary by conference. Always review the conference guidelines before printing your poster.
For students in the Hattiesburg area, Bourne Brothers Printing is a commonly used local printing option. Students outside the Hattiesburg area may use a local printing service, such as Office Depot, or an online academic poster printing service such as PosterNerd or PhDPosters. Online services may also provide tutorials and poster templates. Additional poster templates are available in the resources below.
Students are encouraged to plan ahead for printing and shipping to avoid unnecessary expedited or overnight shipping costs.
Poster Printing Reimbursement
Eligible students may request reimbursement for poster printing expenses associated with an approved research presentation. When shipping is necessary, eligible printing and shipping expenses may be reimbursed up to a maximum of $100 per poster. Students are responsible for expenses exceeding the reimbursement limit.
Reimbursement Requirements
Reimbursement is limited to one poster per presenting student, per conference.
Reprinting substantially the same poster for presentation at multiple conferences within the same year is not eligible for additional reimbursement.
The poster must identify the student’s WCUCOM institutional affiliation and display the appropriate WCUCOM institutional logo.
Projects conducted through a specific academic department, educational program, or externally funded grant may be the financial responsibility of that department, program, or funding source.
To Request Reimbursement, Students Must Provide:
A PDF of the final poster
An itemized receipt documenting the poster printing expense
Documentation confirming presentation of the poster, such as a conference program listing, acceptance or presentation email, or other appropriate documentation
A citation of your poster in AMA format
Submitting Reimbursement
In one email, submit reimbursement request for poster printing to:
Brianna Poole, WCUCOM Operations Coordinator (BPoole@wmcarey.edu)
Dr. Danielle Fastring, Associate Dean of Research (DFastring@wmcarey.edu)
Brianna Triplett, Administrative Assistant to Research and Population Health (BTriplett@wmcarey.edu)
Summer Research Fellowships
Funding of a summer fellowship is possible. To be eligible, a student must be offered an unfunded summer research opportunity at a prominent research institution. The idea is to defray costs enough to make it feasible for the student to take advantage of this opportunity. Click here for instructions and application form.
Publication Costs
Funding of publication costs is available if a student follows our publication procedure. To be eligible, the student must be the first author, a substantial part of the work should be done during their time as a WCUCOM student, and the journal must be well recognized in the field. Student publication of case reports together with WCUCOM preceptors is particularly encouraged. Students interested in publishing case reports or manuscripts should follow the processes outlined on the Case Report Development and Manuscript Development pages in order to be eligible for funding support.
Other Resources
WCUCOM Cureus Academic Channel
WCUCOM maintains a Academic Channel in the Cureus Journal of Medical Science. Only articles with a WCUCOM student as first author are eligible to publish in the channel. Students may publish twice during an academic year as first authors. Students may be included in unlimited articles as secondary authors. There is no fee associated with publishing in the channel, but the procedure outlined on the Case Report Development and Manuscript Development pages must be followed in order to be eligible to submit an article to the journal.
SPSS Licenses
All students will be provided an SPSS license that is required to complete the work in the Population Health course taught in the spring. The license is active for one year. Should students need the license renewed, they can contact the Associate Dean of Research.
Qualtrics
WCUCOM has a site license for the Qualtrics survey platform. Training for the platform is provided quarterly. If you are interested in training, please contact the Associate Dean of Research.
