WBSchussers and WBShredders Ski & Snowboard Clubs are focused on safety first. The clubs use a progressive patch grading system to help students ski/snowboard at the level that is safe for them and everyone else. The patch program is STRICTLY ENFORCED.
A student must be 7 yrs.-18 yrs. to participate in the student patch program. The student must be able to follow instructions and stay with the instructor.
Evaluations
Yes. Alpine Valley Ski School instructors evaluate each student's ability to ski or snowboard. The patch program allows and limits access to areas of the hill according to the student's ability.
Evaluations will take place on the first two club nights at 6 pm during the lessons:
WBSchussers: Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2026 | Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2025
WBShredders: Friday, Jan. 9, 2026 | Friday, Jan. 16, 2025
Additional evaluations should also be available on future club nights; however, this will be at the discretion of Alpine Valley.
You must use a lesson card for each lesson/evaluation. Experienced students may begin at the level that matches their ability. They do not need to start with the beginner lesson.

Patches
There is no charge for the patches. Patches are distributed by the instructor following a successfully completed lesson. It usually takes several attempts to pass each level of patch lessons. Previously earned patches are good for current and future seasons. (Note: If you do not have your previously earned patches, you will need to participate in the evaluations to demonstrate your ability and receive new patches.)
Patches must be displayed at all times, even on non-club nights and when going to Mt. Holly or Pine Knob.
At the bottom of each chairlift there are signs designating the patch necessary to board the lift. It is the responsibility of the students to make certain they are on the appropriate hill and riding the correct lift.
Each patch must be visible to the ski lift operators/security. The entire patch set must be visible, not just the highest patch attained.
A child/student must stay in the area their patch allows even if they are skiing with a parent. Just because they are with a parent does not mean they can go outside of their patch level. The ski school, ski patrol and lift operators all patrol the hills to make sure students are on the hills corresponding to their patches. The goal is SAFETY.
